Paint correction is machine polishing that removes a fine layer of clear coat to take defects out of the paint rather than fill them in. Swirl marks, light scratches, oxidation and water spot etching all live in the clear coat, and polishing is what actually removes them.

It is the difference between a car that looks clean and a car that looks deep. Most people have never seen their own paint corrected, and the change under direct sun is the part that surprises them.

It is almost entirely labor. You are not paying for product, you are paying for hours of skilled machine work by someone who knows how far they can safely go into a clear coat.

What correction involves

Assessment in proper light

Defects are invisible in shade and obvious under direct light. We look at the paint before quoting, because condition is the entire variable.

Wash and decontamination

Nothing gets polished until the surface is clean and decontaminated. Polishing over bonded grit drags it across the paint and creates new damage.

Compounding where needed

A cutting stage on the areas with real defects. This is what removes swirls rather than masking them.

Refining polish

A finer stage that removes the haze compounding leaves and brings the gloss up. Skipping this is why some cheap correction jobs look hazy in the sun.

Protection on top

Bare corrected paint is unprotected. It gets a sealant at minimum, and a ceramic coating if you want the result to last properly.

How to tell your paint needs correcting

Spider-web scratches in direct sun

Fine circular scratches that appear as a halo around a light source. That is swirling, and it is almost always caused by automatic car washes or wiping a dirty car with a dry cloth.

The color looks flat

Especially on dark cars. If black looks grey and red looks dull, the surface is scattering light instead of reflecting it. That is a texture problem, not a color problem.

Water spots that will not wash off

Hard water left to dry in Houston sun etches into the clear coat. Once it has etched, washing does nothing and it needs polishing out.

Wax stops making a difference

If waxing used to transform the car and now barely registers, the surface underneath has degraded past the point where a topping can compensate.

Wax hides swirls for a fortnight. Polishing removes them.

Correction takes a fine layer off the clear coat so the defect is gone rather than filled. It is the difference between a car that looks clean and one that looks deep.

How the job runs

  1. 01

    We assess and quote

In person or from photos taken in daylight. Condition drives everything, so a quote without seeing the paint is a guess.

  2. 02

    Test section first

We correct one area and check the result before committing to the whole car. That sets the approach and shows you what to expect.

  3. 03

    Panel by panel

Worked in sections with the paint inspected between passes. This is why it takes hours and why it cannot be rushed into a same-day slot.

  4. 04

    Protect the result

Sealant or coating over the corrected finish. Without it the paint is bare and starts collecting swirls again immediately.

What correction cannot fix

  • Scratches through the clear coat. If your fingernail catches in it, polishing will not remove it. Anyone who promises otherwise is guessing.
  • Anything down to primer or metal. That is a bodyshop and a respray, not a polisher.
  • Damage on panels with too little clear coat left. Correction removes material, and a car that has been corrected repeatedly or has thin factory paint may not have the depth to spare.
  • Permanent results without protection. Corrected paint swirls again if it goes back through an automatic wash. The correction is the fix, the aftercare is what makes it last.

Questions

Paint correction questions

How much does paint correction cost in Houston?

Correction starts at $399. The final figure depends almost entirely on the condition of the paint rather than the size of the car, because it is hours of labor. Photos taken in daylight give us enough to quote properly.

What is paint correction?

Machine polishing that removes a fine layer of clear coat to eliminate swirl marks, light scratches and oxidation. It removes the defect rather than filling it in, which is the difference between correction and a glaze or a wax that hides marks for a few weeks.

Will it remove every scratch?

No. If you can catch a fingernail in a scratch, it has gone through the clear coat and polishing will not remove it. Correction fixes swirls, light scratches and oxidation. We look at the paint first and tell you what will improve and what will not.

How long does paint correction take?

Most of a day for a typical car, and longer for one in poor condition. It is done in stages with the paint checked between passes, which is why it is booked about a week ahead rather than squeezed into a standard appointment.

Is paint correction safe for my car?

Done properly, yes. It removes a very small amount of clear coat, and a car has enough to be corrected a limited number of times over its life. That is exactly why it matters who does it and why we test a section before working the whole car.

Should I get a ceramic coating afterwards?

It is the logical pairing. Correction restores the finish and a coating protects it so it lasts, rather than swirling again within months. Most people do both as one job, correction first.

What causes swirl marks in the first place?

Automatic car washes, mostly. The brushes carry grit from the vehicle in front and drag it across your clear coat. Drying a car with a dirty or dry towel does the same thing on a smaller scale.
